Wreck it Sideways

As you probably all have read, Tijs, Ricardo and I went to the D1RC World Championship, held at MotoArena, Silverstone circuit, UK. This is a short feature about the bodyshell I made for this event!

Since this was a rather large event, we(the members of Team Orange NL) decided it would be cool that we would all use the same livery and colors. The livery we used is designed by Tijs, and is based on the livery the Dutch Coast Guard uses on their vehicles and boats.

Most of the Dutch drivers decided to create something quite unique, so therefore I decided to do a little front conversion 🙂

As the title already hints, I took a Tamiya RX-7FD shell, and combined this with the front and fenders of a HPI Racing RX-8.

There are some examples spread over the internet of people badly glueing 2 old shells together, but as far as I know, at the moment I started this build, no one ever made a brand new RX-7.8!

As I said, I’ve put some hard effort into the project trying to create something special. Therefore, I used a vintage Tamiya rally driverset which I filled with a lot of small details, like an Ajax/Chubb fire extinguisher, a GoPro Motorsports HD, a 50cl can of Atomic Energydrink and lots more!

The graphics on the car are made by SencDiSign, Stickerland, hlGraphics and our sponsor Touge Automotive!

For this bodyshell I custom made an allround aero package, a little like that on Time Attack cars, consisting of a front splitter, canards, skirts and a rear diffuser with vortex generators to give the car a more agressive look..

To keep the rotational mass as low as possible, I chose a nice set of Gramlight 57D rims. I think they look very cool, and they fit Royal Flush in the wheel arches!

Here you can see how the shell looks after 4 days of continuous drifting. The splitter and diffuser went MIA, probably because of some apex clipping and wallrides!
